Music

Music at Poppleton Ousebank

At Poppleton Ousebank, we want our pupils to feel that they are musical, and enable them to develop a life-long love of music. We focus on developing the skills, knowledge and understanding that children need in order to become confident performers, composers, and listeners. Our curriculum introduces children to music from all around the world and across generations, teaching children to respect and appreciate the music of all traditions and communities. They will develop an understanding of the history and cultural context of the music that they listen to and learn how music can be written down.

We utilise the Kapow Primary music scheme of work to support our implementation of the music curriculum by developing staff subject knowledge and reducing workload. We ensure that there is clear progression across the year groups for the key strands of performing, listening and composing, as well the history of music and the dimensions of music: pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, texture, structure and timbre.

Over the course of our curriculum, children will be taught how to sing fluently and expressively, and play tuned and untuned instruments accurately and with control. They will learn to recognise pitch, duration, tempo, timbre, structure, texture and dynamics and use these expressively in their own improvisations and compositions. We have a spiral curriculum which ensures that previous knowledge is returned to and developed. This ensures pupils know more and remember more over time. This ensures that pupils can make progress by tackling increasingly complex tasks and completing simple tasks to a higher standard. In each lesson, we ensure that all pupils actively participate in musical activities drawn from a range of styles and traditions, developing their musical skills and their understanding of how music works.

Enrichment

Music is a key part of our pupils’ wider development. Music clubs include school bands such as Rock & Pop, choir and Boomwhackers, as well as access to peripatetic lessons that ensure all pupils have the opportunity to learn an instrument of their choice.

Learning an instrument

If you are interested in your child learning an instrument, please find the contact details for our dedicated peripatetic music teachers below. Pupils can learn to play on their own or in a small group. There is a charge for additional instrumental lessons but we are committed to ensuring all pupils have the opportunity to learn an instrument, regardless of family circumstances.
